Inspirational Hair-Stylists- Part 2

Sam McKnight

1.
Sam McKnight is another one of the most accomplished and well-respected hair stylists in the fashion industry.
His Style is modern and sexy- whether it's in magazines, on the runway or the red carpet.

He collaborated with some of the best names in the fashion industry:
Patrick Demarchelier, Nick Knight and Mario Testino; KArl Lagerfeld/Chanel, Vivienne Westwood, Balmain and Fendi to name just a few.

Sam's permanence in the world of fashion imagery is pretty much fixed with iconic pictures in modern history- Princess Diana's short, slicked back hair, Agyness Deyn's bleached blond crop, Madonna's Bedtime Stories cover, Cate Blanchett getting her Oscar, Tilda Swindon channelling Bowie, Lady Gaga and Jo Calderone and countless covers and editorial hairstyles of Kate Moss and all the supermodels.
Sam is one of the most demanded hair stylist in the industry. And why? It is probably his constant search for the new.

Sam's career started by accident. He studied in a college in Scotland to become a teacher. He absolutely hated it and he dropped out at the age of 19. He ended up helping out a friend who owned a hairdressing salon by washing hair in the salon, just to get some money.
This is how he got into hairdressing. After a few years he moved to London where he started working in a Molton Brown hair salon. The salon was around the corner from Vogue magazine and they used stylists from the salon for their cover shoots. One day, he covered for one of the hairdressers who couldn't make it that day. This was around 1978 and this is how his fashion career started.

"The industry didn't really exist back then. There were only a few hair and make up people who were freelance. I think in England I was one of the first people to go with an agency and be solely on photo shoots. I left the salon in 1980. It was a real risky thing to do because the business was fairly small. It existed but it wasn't a big business. People shot TV commercials and stuff like that but the fashion industry didn't really exist in the way it does now."- Sam McKnight
